I’ve always been moved by attics smells that feel like a whiff of history - dusty boxes of old photographs tied with faded pink ribbons, even cobwebs, and torn curtains and now this wonderful collection of island images. It was a trip!
What began as my mother's personal search for beauty on film and palette followed by my desire to preserve and present these images has become an affectionate display for all who know Vinalhaven or can ever know.
This was first a slide show with two projectors, a Wollensak disslove, and music in 1989. I never intended it for non-islanders to view, I simply wanted to do it. It was my gift back to the people on an island I loved. My mother's large collection (over 10,000 catalogued slides) of her own images and paintings of the island made the beginning of this possible. When I finally began this work in 1987 it was strictly a personal project.
