Each kit may include items such as hand-made papers, fabrics, found pieces, text, photos, sheet music, ribbons, threads, lace papers, stickers, stamps, puzzle pieces, and pressed Maine flowers. There is enough material to create several works of art. Part of the charm exists in the small scratches, tears, and time worn spots on these elements. With the addition of the American Proof Card and First Day Cover you will find a bit of US and/or Natural History to work into your collage.

HELPFUL HINTS: You might begin by just tearing and cutting shapes, crumpling, pleating, folding the papers. Look around and use anything else at hand. Think about starting your own collection of collage mat- erials which might include things you find outdoors such as small stones, seed pods, twigs. You name it.

Use contrast of colors. Repeat some colors and textures through-out the collage. Add watercolor and/or crayon to background. Paint or letter on the layers it's all up to you.

When your collage is finished ask yourself, "How is it like a painting? How is it different?" "Why do or don't the colors, textures, and shapes I used look good together?" Go to the library and/or internet and research famous collage artists.

Be sure to sign and date it when finished.

There is a wonderful world of ideas out there and a wonderful world of fun for you!
